Rather than install parental controls in numerous tablets etc - is it possible to install them on the router so that whoever uses the broadband in our house can't access the unwanted?

It depends upon which router you've got. Some manufacturers offer the sort of facility you're seeking, e.g. Netgear ( http://www.netgear.co.uk/discover/apps/lpc ), but not all do.

The ISP is Talk Talk and the router is a D Link 3780 - don't know a thing about parental controls and where to install them - is there a blanket app/program that would do it all?
Or would I be better to use the one that Talk Talk use IE Supersafe?
Dont give out your modem password.
Log in to your TalkTalk account first:
https://myaccount.talktalk.co.uk/home/dashboard

Then go here:
https://myaccount.talktalk.co.uk/myservices/network/homesafe

That should provide you with the instructions you need. (I can't check them myself because I'm not with TalkTalk, so I can't access the information).
