How Do I Get My Mothers Ipad Connected To Her Bluetooth Device

Hi there
My mother has brought her ipad and a bluetooth device she bought today to my house. I got my ipad connected no problem but when I try to connect her device it keeps searching for ages and never finding, she has had the same problem at her home.
I dont understand what we are doing wrong, i dont think its the device. She got connected at her house but no sound came out feeling confused?
