Vodafone 'internet' Charges

We use 'smart' phones, but only as phones (and a bit of texting). They're a handy size for older fingers.
We aren't connected to the www through the phones (we don't pay anybody anything for connection).
And yet Vodafone have billed us for £30+ over the past couple of months for 'internet' @ £2 a throw. They say we have had our 'data' button turned on. We didn't even know we HAD a data button until I searched for it today, and found it, 'off'.
Absolutely unmoveable. All they can 'suggest' is us taking the offending phone into a Vodafone store (not convenient, but there you go), where the Man behind the counter will say 'Yes, it is OFF now, but it must have been on when you were billed...'

Vodafone said they have changed things recently to give more "stability". If the WiFi you are on drops at all, it automatically switched to mobile data now. I also had to turn mine off. They did refund the extra though. Try again- as you might get through to a different person next time.
I had a fairly basic phone (with Vodafone) where my PAYG credit kept going down far faster than I'd expected. I then realised that there was an app on it that showed the current weather on the screen (which I could have found out anyway, simply by looking out of the window).
At that time, unless I'd subscribed to data 'bundles' (which I hadn't) any use of the internet was charged at £1 per day (for unlimited access). So, even though I wasn't doing any web browsing or emailing, I was being charged £30 per month just to know what the weather was like!
As has been said, you need to turn the data connection off. Perhaps you're looking at the wrong thing though? If you tell us the make and model of your phone we might be able to help.

If your phone can get a signal from a Vodafone mast then it's connected to the internet. Unless 'Data' is switched off then the various apps on your phone will keep using the internet for updates.
Each manufacturer tweaks the Android operating system to their own requirements, so what I see on my Alcatel phone might not match what you see on your Samsung one. However looking at the user manual for your phone (and then comparing it with what I see on my own phone) suggests that you need to do the following:
1. Tap the Apps Screen icon (9 dots, bottom right).
2. Tap 'Settings'.
3. Tap 'Data Usage'
4. Tap 'Mobile' (I need to do that on my phone but I can't see it mentioned in the user manual for your one, so you might need to skip that bit).
5. Tap 'Mobile Data'.
6. When you see "Turn off mobile data?", click on 'OK'.
On my phone there's an alternative (and simpler) method of doing things. So, if the above method doesn't work, you can see if the following helps you:
1. Drag down from the top of the screen.
2. Then repeat that action.
3. That takes me to a screen where 'Data connection' is shown 'lit up' (showing that it's 'on'). Simply tapping on it turns it grey (meaning that it's 'off').
