Been there Tills could be a number of things. First thing I would do is clear the search history and see if that helps. It is the easiest thing to try first. I know that you are running a w10 machine and if it is not happening there it is not your router or interwatsit connection.

Do that and then have a look at this link. Do not attempt anything that you are not comfortable with.

Togo, I use Windows 7 on the old laptop. Mr T uses Windows 10 on the new laptop.

I'm very charitable.

Does that make your link useful for me? Rubbishy laptop and dusty keyboard?
This link goes to a site where they'd like you to download their software if you get as far as 'Step 4'. I'm NOT recommending doing that (as I know nothing about that software) but the link is still of value as Steps 1, 2 and 3 are all worth trying (and this site keeps the instructions clear and simple):

It's also worth power cycling your router to see if that helps. ('Power cycling' is a posh name for 'turning it off and on again!)

Given that such problems can occur when your computer doesn't communicate too well with the DNS server that your ISP uses, it might also be worth changing your DNS server as well. (It often speeds up page loading anyway, so it can't do any harm and might do a bit of good):

Click Start > Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.

Click Change Adapter Settings. (It's on the left).

Right-click on the icon for your connection and select Properties.

Click on Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) to highlight it.

Click on Properties.

In the lower part of the panel you'll probably see that 'Obtain DNS server address automatically' is selected. Change that to 'Use the following server addresses'.

Enter 8.8.8.8 in the 'preferred' field and 8.8.4.4. in the 'alternative' field. (That selects Google's public DNS server, which is probably the most popular one these days. Alternatively you can use OpenDNS, as I do, by entering 208.67.222.222 in the first field and 208.67.220.220 in the other one).

Click OK.

Click Close.

Close the window that's still on your screen.

Thank you both, very much, for the suggestions. I will try them out later today.
I had the same problem with my Sky connection, I phoned them, they talked me through it step by stem and then done a speed test, they then talked me through getting a faster connection and my connection speed is about 6 times faster, result!! no hassle and took 10 mins on the phone.
Oh, and they sent me a new free router just in case mine was getting problems and it arrived the next day.

I have given up and have bought laptop!

I followed all the advice and still got nowhere.

Thanks to those of you who tried to help.
That's what I'd have done too Tilly :-)

It was seven years old, Prudie. It has stood me in good stead but it was time to say goodbye.
Looking forward to my nice, new, shiny machine.
I hope you are right in assuming it isn't the router or your connection at fault.

Ratter, I am sure that it's not the router as Mr T's laptop works perfectly well, using the same router.
Drivereasy as a program is very good but the free version does not do the driver updates automatically. I think, as its quite cheap for the Pro version, the small outlay is justified. That said connections are subject to several factors so updating EVERYTHING is equally important as is regular cleanups. I changed the wireless card on my last laptop to an Intel one and the speed doubled and the connection became more reliable. That process is cheap and relatively easy.
