Mcafee Problem

My husband bought a new computer this afternoon. He was given as part of the package A free mcafee virus detector.
However when he tried to download it on the given website filling in the pass code for mcafee name address ect it would not download. So we pressed the help page talk to someone. They said yes all the details had been logged but there seemed to be a problem. He then transferred us to a technical person who took over our computer ran a scan and told us that our new computer had viruses on caused by connecting it to our wi if network phones iPads ect.
Obviously wanted a fee to clear it. We declined but now worried that he had access to the computer nothing on it as it’s brand new. Is this a normal procedure for macfee not sure what to do. We closed the computer down. Any advice. We are not technical so just tried to follow the information in front of us

All sounds very weird. As it was new and apparently flawed maybe take it back for a disk wipe and reinstallation of the operating system ?

Personally I'd not bother with free McAfee virus detectors. There are plenty of other decent anti-virus packages around.

Obviously wanted a fee to clear it ? Would've thought they'd do it for customer goodwill. After all it's their package that has problems, and I don't give much credit to this WiFi connection explanation.

Was the website you were told to visit the official one for McAfee.?

Is the computer operating on Windows 10 .? If so then it should have loaded Windows Defender from which you can do a scan to see if any viruses are in the machine.

If you are able to do a scan, please report back, accordingly.
