Ebooks From The Public Library

I've been downloading ebooks from the public libraries for years and when I first started the vast majority of books were available for immediate download.

A book that has taken my fancy is out for loan and won't be available until January 2025.   Gives me something to look forward to, I suppose. (The Teacher by Tim Sullivan if you are wondering).

I'm pleased that the service has become so popular, though.  It's good to know our libraries are being used.

Do you borrow eBooks from the library?  If so, how long are you prepared to wait for a book?

Have you tried looking in other libraries. Some libraries allow non-residents to join - we log on to Reading,  West Berks, Oxford, Wiltshire and Stafford. Hampshire (only next door) won't let us. Try a few and you might get the book sooner.

How can an e-book be out on loan for a year?

i would have thought that you borrowed it, read it within weeks and then told them you were finished!

are they only able to allow one person to read each book at a time?

Wolf, the libraries pay royalties for every single loan so they limit availability comparable to the number of print copies they would stock.

Royalties?  Not sure if that word is correct but you know what I mean. I would guess there is a queue of 12 or 24 people waiting for that book

The books are not totally free but are free to the reader.

I often get emails telling me my book is available early, because others haven't kept it for the full month

Borrowing from the library is better for the author than buying second hand books or giving books away.

I did, then Adobe Digital Editions stopped working & I haven't got round to looking into it yet, but I will.

I've waited several months in the past (can't remember what for) & I guess if I really wanted it, I'd wait for however long it took.
