Just reading one now "probiscites".

Are there no English people that write English properly any more?

Standards everywhere are going downhill. Too many people are allowed to be sloppy in whatever they do, and not just contributors to AB.

I think probiscites are meant to improve your health...

...or your grammar...

*chortle*...get ready to duck!

It gets up my nose.

While the poster is typing out the word 'probiscites' he isn't putting an acronym in his post that only a handful of people understand. Neither is he spouting Cockney rhyming slang that only those born within the sound of Bow bells know what he's talking about! Neither is he making spelling or grammar errors that he then blames on typos!

who says probiscites?

You will have to email the Ab Editor and ask him, it's not against the Site Rules unless the made up word contains an offensive word.

I misread it at first and wondered about colonoscopies.

I thought at first it was referring to a type of monkey with a very large nose.

How can it be offensive if no one knows what it means?

PP gets away with it in almost everything he posts! 🤣

first I've ever seen it on here, where is it from canary?

no I use long English words ( like doggie and putrescent and smelly) which arent made up but in the dictionary. - no dont go thro my posts, complete waste of time

// dont go thro my posts, complete waste of time//

Agreed - I would rather chew my arm off than go through your old posts! 🤣

You're far more respected than maybe you realize Peter. at least you seem to know what you're on about. Unlike some ABers... who like to waffle for the sake of it

davebro, I was referring to long words that contain a shorter, offensive word such as that town in Lincolnshire halfway between Doncaster and Grimsby.

Gawd but it doesnt shut you up about them, does it

I cd only do three - muvva for mother, Gawd for God, deah for dear. and then  I lost the will to  live. Do Abers not realise muvva stands for 'mother' ? oh Gawd

haha - gotcha...

Well, I do, I hope - except for typos when my fingers move too fast for the keys (I was taught to touch-type way back when).  I think most people do write 'proper' (or reasonably 'proper') English.  But Bookbinder is right.

So very many years ago now - a kid argued with me about his need to improve his English.  His reasoning?

"Why I need do English? I c'n talk it car't I?"  It was a widespread attitude which has become the norm.
