Anyone here favours the Deist view, or prefers the Theist?

(Deist sits on the edge of creation paring his nails. Theist keeps an eye on everyone (including 'aliens') and steps in when necessary.)

I favour folk choose whatever myths & legends that help them live a moral life and treat others with the same charity as they would hope to receive themselves. So one of the above is as good as the other.

Question Author

Agreed, OG. But, 'morals' and 'charity' seem to vary depending on how you were indoctrinated as an innocent child. Deist to me is meaningless, and Theist to me is daft. But the old beast will doubtless explain all in due course. I must say that I expect better from the old beast than a thunderbolt followed by eternal suffering, if he's hoping for a bit of respeck from me.

Question Author

I think that 'treat others with the same charity as they would hope to receive themselves' is the only thing that's worthwhile, and I hope that the old beast agrees with me.

Question Author

And the deist view means that at least he won't punish you further than he did when he created us in the first place.

Theist.

If (some) deists believe that there is a creator but it doesn't intervene in human affairs and there is no afterlife - isn't that practically the same as atheism?

Question Author

Davebro. Difficult question. I don't really understand Deism, it seems to be simply using the word God instead of 'We don't yet know', but at least we are are working on it. I don't really understand Atheism, as it is not possible to prove a negative; It would perhaps be better to use the term Antitheism for what we call Atheism.

Atheism doesn't have to prove a negative,  It's simply an absence of belief in supernatural Gods.  I don't believe in fairies either.  There's nothing to prove or disprove.

Question Author

Naomi, Atheists are often thought of by some religious people as wicked and deserving of eternal torment. Perhaps such a fate should only be reserved for those who believe in God but are against him, not for poor souls who see no reason to accept his existence. A decent God would surely welcome such people in Heaven, so that they could finally believe and worship.

//A decent God would surely welcome such people in Heaven, so that they could finally believe and worship.//

Why would a decent God crave adulation?

Why do atheists never define the God which they deny?

Best you re-think that one, Khandro.

// It would perhaps be better to use the term Antitheism for what we call Atheism./

I agree & it's a shame that atheists haven't campaigned for their non-belief as much as the theists have for their beliefs.

Question Author

davebro; I think there's enough trouble in the world already. Best not to start a shouty campaign. Cultivate your garden.

A 11:43 I asked a question, which I'll ask it again;

Why do atheists never define the God which they deny?

11 hours have passed but still no answer, though I'm asked by naomi to "re-think" that question. (?)

I do not need to 're-think' the question. If I 'need' anything at all it is a simple answer.

Like naomi, I believe you do need to rethink it.

Why would a decent God crave adulation?

oh we do from  the Bible OT - the cherubim and seraphim continuously  do cry.... show  already started

To thee Cherubim and Seraphim : continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy : Lord God of Sabaoth; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty : of thy glory. The ...

Atheism noun : A philosophical or religious position characterized by disbelief in the existence of a god or any gods.

but we really knew that didnt  we

It is just more AB to ask " why day do dat" when you know exactly  why they are doing  that. But it is funnier  and  quippier to assert the  opposite

Canary; I didn't ask for a definition of an atheist. Do you not understand my simple question? (PP does). I asked for your definition of the God you deny the existence of.
