//Sir Keir wants the UK to be seen as leading the global response to irregular migration and the summit underlines the government's conviction that only international co-operation along the smuggling routes can tackle the issue.//

More hot air from this Prime Minister whose greatest strength appears to be in grandstanding on the world stage.
Before Labour came into power they had all the answers to this problem. Now they are hoping other countries come up with the answer for them as they haven't got a clue as to how they deal with it. Starmer is quite happy to say he is helping sort out other places problems but ignore the ones he has here and he has plenty of problems at home. His passport will soon run out of space to put the stamps of countries he has visited. Maybe mad Ed needs to have a word with him and some of his cabinet about global warming as they are contributing to it a lot.
Nothing wrong with jaw jaw, but to get action one needs the gall to actually do something.
Like change the legislation to block any loopholes used to prevent a sensible solution, process the arrivals quickly (obviously if they came from a nation neighbouring the UK they can not be refugees/asylum seekers, so that's a quick decision), and return them 'immediately' back to wherever they left.
Sir Keir wants to blame everyone and everything except himself and his government who perpetuate the Garden of Eden of hotels, free health care and education, and years of doing nothing, that the UK offers to its illegals.
Make it less attractive to come here, and they'll stop coming, it's not difficult.
As for the idea that every other country that waves through migrants because their destination is always going to be the UK, is going to help the UK stop them arriving, is simply farcical.
But bluddy hell, andy, why are we giving all these illegals so much.Free luxury hotels, free healthcare, free money(£9 a week i think),God sake,no wonder they are flocking to the UK,they must think they have died and went to Heaven. When is Starmer going to wake up.My Nigerian friends wonder also, they came here legally but are getting turfed out,yet these illegal scum-bags seem to be deportation proof.I think at the last count these illegals cost the UK £7 billion a year!!!!Jesus wept, are we mad?
I notice that there is a new slogan on the PM’s lectern. During the GE campaign I seem to recall during the GE campaign it was “Stop the boats.” Then it morphed into “Smash the Gangs”. Now it’s changed to “Securing our borders” or some such similar drivel. I notice in his press conference today he said this:
“My message to people smugglers is this: We’re breaking your business model and leaving you nowhere to hide”.
Platitudinous nonsense. I can imagine, even as he spoke, the people smugglers were busy counting their latest takings from today’s passengers.
“…..process the arrivals quickly (obviously if they came from a nation neighbouring the UK they can not be refugees/asylum seekers, so that's a quick decision), and return them 'immediately' back to wherever they left.”
No, no, no, OG. The only way, the one and only way, to stop this outrage is to physically prevent them from landing. Nothing else will do. Of course the luxurious facilities they are being provided with should stop immediately. In fact, that should never have begun. But they will not stop coming here because they know, despite the PM’s threats, that once here, it is very unlikely they will be removed.
Mr Starmer’s announcement that 20,000 people have been returned is disingenuous as far as this issue goes. There are very few – if any – “irregular arrivals” included in that total. The overwhelming majority are people who arrived here legally but overstayed.
The boats need to be prevented from entering UK waters – by force if necessary. They should be ordered to turn round and contact the French coastguard to escort them safely back to France.
This is a scandal on an unprecedented scale and it is costing the taxpayer billions of pounds. Allowing it to continue is a dereliction of the government’s duty to protect our borders. Fannying about with “summits” of leaders who have no interest in preventing people from leaving mainland Europe and heading here will serve no purpose. This country talks of preparing for war with Russia. As part of that it should hone its skills by stopping a few rubber boats from landing on our shores. If it manages that it can move on to something a little more ambitious.
I've said this before, many times, and I'll say it again;
There is no deterrent strong enough to stop people WANTING to come to this country illegally. If the possibility of dying, trying to cross the busiest shipping lane in the world isn't deterrent enough, then what is? The knowledge of certain death could be the answer! Oops! Can't say that, can I? 😉
"...it is true that the uk cannot resolve people smuggling unilaterally."
These people are not being "smuggled". It's the wrong term. When something is smuggled it's usually to avoid interception or detection. This is often because whatever is being smuggled is either illegal or would attract a levy perhaps by way of excise duty.
Small boat occupants do not worry about being detected; in fact in most cases they positively seek it.They arrive in clear sight and are usually brought ashore by the very people tasked with protecting our borders.
The “mischief” which is causing the country so much trouble is committed by those arriving on these shores without permission. It is not committed by those providing them with a rubber boat.
The “people smugglers” business model can be broken in a day by preventing unauthorised small boats from entering UK waters. A day of would-be arrivals being forced to turn round would end the practice almost immediately.
This government (and its predecessors) is tackling this problem from the wrong end. They will never disrupt the boat-providers sufficiently, with or without the cooperation of other countries.
People need to be prevented from landing.
There would then be no need find them accommodation and pay for their keep; there would be no need to assess their right to remain here or to deal with the multitude of legal processes that accompany that; no need to waste time and money trying to "smash the gangs.".
Unless and until that happens (and there is absolutely no sign that it ever will) this will continue unabated.
“some of them are being smuggled newjudge”
A very few might be. But the overwhelming majority of them are not.
They set out in plain sight (often under the watchful eye of the French police). They cross in plain sight (often assisted to the mid point by the French coastguard). They contact the UK authorities using contact numbers provided for them in France. They are picked up by either Border Force or RNLI vessels and brought ashore, often with TV cameras present, at the Port of Dover. Once there they are greeted and transported to Manston for processing.
That, by any stretch of the imagination, does not see them “smuggled”.
"i seem to recall a year or so ago most of those making small boat crossings were being trafficked from vietnam."
Then they passed through quite a number of countries before reaching the coast in France. If those countries had enforced their borders instead of subscribing to the ridiculous Schengen Agreement, their fate may have been discovered earlier and they could have sought proection from whoever was allegedly traffiking them.
Any who did arrive in those circumstances should be returned to Vietnam or to France.
“that's the problem with blanket assertions about the issue. some are asylum seekers, some are economic migrants.”
My blanket assertion is that nobody arriving in this country from France requires asylum. They have had ample opportunity to seek it elsewhere. Economic migrants can apply to settle via the UK embassy in their country of origin.
