I'd like to post a pic but I don't know how.

Laptop won't turn on, screen looks like it is damaged with several cracks on it, but doesn't feel like it is damaged (sorry, can't explain very well).

Could it be a virus?

TIA. x

Are you running it on the battery, or with the power on?  I am thinking if on battery that the battery is flat.

Question Author

Thanks, I'm running it on power. Think I'll either need a new screen (if that's possible) or a new computer. 🫤

It could be as simple as the cable that connects the screen has become loose/disconnected.

A trip to your local repair shop before splurging on a new machine

Thanks Barry.

Laptop screens can be replaced.  Can you take a photo and upload it here?

I take it you've tried a hard reset - hold power button for 30 seconds.

Question Author

Yes, I've tried that.

Does a light come on, any beeps, any sign of life?

depending on what inspiron, does it have an hdmi port, if so with ta cable you could plug laptop into a monitor or tv and test if its the screen or not.

I'd like to post a pic but I don't know how.

The only light that comes on is the caps lock, OH has had a look and said it's definitely a screen problem.

You can upload a pic here:

And then post the link.

Question Author

Thank you fender, unfortunately I know very little about that, neither does OH and he says  we could buy the cable you mentioned but he's worried about giving it a go.

Please excuse delay in replying, the screen on my mobile phone is very small and it's not easy to type on it.

Hope this works.

Well that screen is KO'd whatever.

As pointed out above if you have a monitor or TV plug the HDMI from the Laptop into the screen, you may see something (depending on what is running i.e. Windows or DOS)

Screens can be replaced, done na fair few, but it is often very time consuming and fiddly so unless you can do it yourself thats probably not an option.

You could have it checked but that can cost too

Phone your local repair shop, tell them the make and model and ask how much to replace the screen.

The type of screen will affect price, LCD and LED will be much cheaper than OLED.

If your laptop is old it probably won't be worth repairing

Thanks for replies all, much appreciated.

Great news, I popped it in to a repair shop this morning, no sooner got back home and the chap text me to go and pick it up! Luckily he had a replacement screen in stock. A bit pricey at £113 but I'm feeling a lot happier about having it back. 😊
