Broadband, Wifi, Router advice
4 Answers
I am really confused about what I want to buy and do not understand the difference between various bits of technology.
I use broadband, using a BT line (not cable). I have only one personal computer (which is shared) in one room and in another room at the other end of my home, is my telephone socket. The socket contains the cable to the phone and a cable that runs across my home into the back of my computer. I want to do away with this latter cable, which one could easily trip over. I realise that this is now technologically possible.
As an example, I have been looking at a Netgear Rangemax Next wireless ASDL modem router and adapter, but not sure this is the right sort of product, as I only have one personal computer. I do not know if I should be looking at a wireless router, broadband router, ASDL router or wireless gateway? It is all so confusing. I am not keen on opening up my personal computer's moden and fiddling about putting in a card either. Is that necessary? Can anybody advise me if I am looking at the right kind of equipment and if not, what should I be buying.
Thanks.

A wireless ADSL router is a modem for your computer that you can put near the telephone socket. It communicates wirelessly with other devices. Many laptops now have wireless capability built-in (allowing you to roam the house on-line), but in the case of your desktop computer you will need to buy a receiver for this signal. These are available as a simple usb plug-in and are not too expensive.
It is important that your wireless router is set up properly, or else neighbours may be able to access your internet service.

note that wireless may be less reliable than wired: obstructing walls etc. can sometimes pose problems. this depends on your house though.
as pagey says too though, you want an adsl modem+router in one, with an adapter. these adapters fit into the back of your computer. you can get usb ones that just plug in, and don't require you to take the case off your computer. not quite as good as the PCI models though, but you may prefer them.

you can find good deals there. they did have good offer for a netgear (good brand) wireless modem+router and adapter combo. i would link directly but the site isn't loading for me right now.
