How can I instantly check the speed of my broadband?

For the best results you do need to close any internet applications before you run the test - but it only takes a minute or so.

I second speedtest.net. Works very accurately.

For a better idea of the true speed, make sure that it's the only thing using your internet connection at the time, and also run the test a few times, over different days, at different times of day ideally.

You may find your connection to be slower in the evening than in the day for example, due to contention ratios.
