computer problem

Hi,
My computer has gone mad! It takes up to 3 hours sometimes just to turn it on and get on the internet. Sometimes it just shuts again when I do. Sometimes it freezes completely and I cant do anything but switch it of on the wall. It comes up with all sorts of errors all the time. I have scanned it for virus's counltless times using different programs, to no avail. I think it has drive problems. I want to re-install it using the cd I have. However, in order to proceed with the re-installation, I need the 24 character code on the back of the computer. This is my problem. The computer is 3 years old, and my wife peeled off the sticker with the code on it and threw it away years ago without consulting me. Is there anyway I can retrieve this code or any other way I can make this computer new again like the day I bought it, or should I just throw it away and buy a new one?

You should be able to retrieve your old product key using this free program:

Backup anything you want to keep from your computer to somewhere else, like an external hard drive or flash drive.

Once you have the product key using the program above, write it down and then put the windows CD in and restart. You should then do a complete format (it will ask you if you want to wipe your current windows installation or something like that). From then on your computer should be as fast as it was the day you got it.

I have the greatest respect for Fo3nix but can I suggest a slight change to his/her answer?

Try running the Windows installation program without reformatting the drive. An 'on top' installation of Windows often corrects registry problems and avoids the need to re-format the drive. If it works, you'll keep all of your existing files and software, together with such things as your e-mail accounts and ISP log-on details.

If the 'on top' installation doesn't work, then you'll be forced to do a 'clean' installation after formatting the hard disk. However, this is a drastic step because it means that you'll lose everything on your hard drive, including documents, pictures, software and passwords.

If you suspect Hard Drive problems ( quite likely ) I would suggest you do a Scandisk - full before proceeding with a reload. If the drive is duff then install a newer quicker one and off you go.

Thank you everyone. Fo3nix, I used your link and it worked like a dream. I got my code within a few seconds of scanning for it. I couldnt believe it. I then went on and Re-installed my computer. It now seems to be working fine!
