I get so much spam & emails stating 'returned undelivered' that I have nothing to do with & its driving me crazy. My spam filters are set high but still the problem persists. Is it possible to close an outlook express account & just use another email service & if so, how do I go about it. your answers would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

You can choose any email service you like.

I recommend Google Mail.

Google's GMail service is a web-based service. Some people have security concerns based upon the fact that all mail is electronically scanned by Google's software. (The stated reason is so that advertising matter can be accurately targetted at users. However, pro-privacy groups are still concerned about the possible misuse of the system):

In my opinion, the best free e-mail service, which is compatible with e-mail clients such as Outlook Express, has to be Gawab. The main pages on the website sing the praises of their web-based access but you never need to use this if you don't want to. (Just consult the link for 'Features > POP/SMTP', at the top of the page, for details of how to set up Outlook Express). The best way to commence the sign-up procedure is to click on 'More cities & countries'. This will offer you a range of domain names. (I use both gawab.com and alex4all.com):

(You can sign up as many times as you like, so you can have multiple e-mail addresses).

thanks for your replies which I appreciate have have taken on board what you have all said. Can I ask one more thing please? If I set up another email account, can I completely uninstall the outlook express account that I'm having bother with completely - I just want to get shot of the nasty emails coming through. If I can, how do I do it. As you are no doubt aware, I'm not that confident with things like this on my computer. thanks again.
Removing an account from Outlook Express is very simple:

Go to Tools > Accounts

Click on the 'Mail' tab

If you've only got one account, it will already be highlighted. If you've got more than one account, click on the relevant account to highlight it.

Click 'Remove'. You'll be asked if you really want to remove the account. Select 'Yes'.

Hi Buenchico,

Gmail is not just a web-based service. You can use it with Outlook Express or any other email software. You only see the adverts if you use it in webmail.

Buenchico: I agree with what you're saying, but do you, and others, really think that no-one else like Yahoo and Microsoft don't scan your emails either? Plus there's the government issue of them supposedly scanning everything anyway; anyone who needs to send something private should use GPG too.

thelewisgang: try using Thunderbird instead:

You'll find it very similar to Outlook, but it has a far better spam filter that learns are you report spam, so I typically get very few spam emails into my inbox.
