I have just bought a new lap top and don't have the internet at home. If I went into a WiFi area with my lap top would I straight away be able to use the internet or would I need to install something first? Thanks

Assuming your laptop is wifi enabled (they usually are) you would be able to connect to an insecure wifi - but this is illegal if it is done without the owner's knowledge and permission.
You could go to a wifi hotspot and log on - it is not usually free. You normally have to have an account with OpenZone or The Cloud. Ipswich has free hotspots all over the city centre I believe.
Try enabling your wifi now, and search for any nearby networks. You may be surprised what pops up.
