Firstly, can someone please tell me is a forum and a blog the same thing? I'd like to include something of the sort on an existing website, where readers can make comments, ask questions etc., but there's such a forest of information about forums and blogs that I don't know where to start. Information about an easy, simple system would be most welcome. Thank you.

a blog is a web log. An online diary. Usually, blogging software allows people to leave comments on your diary entries so there is some interaction there.
A forum is like the answerbank, where anybody can start posts and anybody can reply. Whereas with a blog only the blogger, ie you, can start a post.

Thank you boobesque for a helpful answer. I shall have to find suitable blogging software.
Very simple ones can be created with Blogger.com or slightly more fancy ones with Wordpress.com

The latter allows you to either host it with them, or download the software and do it all yourself.
