Zoo Tycoon DS

I've borrowed this game (Zoo ****** for Nintendo DS) from a friend and have had it for around 2 months. Whenever I set up drinks and food stands they make barely any profit, probaly maximum of $4 and when I set up a restaurant or gift shop, they make absolutely no profit at all! Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I've tried to re-arrange the paths so that you can get directly into the doors and I've looked but there are no extra staff to hire such as cashiers or chefs, Can anybody who can help please get back to me as soon as possible becuase this is driving me crazy!! Thank-you.
