my daughter has just bought a laptop for her room at university. Internet access is provided at cost (expensive)through one company only. Does this mean that my daughter has to go with them or is there another way she can access the internet? Does this mean that the one company has the monopoly?

The alternatives are also expensive - through her mobile phone company. This is rarely satisfactory and usually expensive.

I don't see how your daughter can change the ISP at her university room - she does not have the authority to contract another ISP to supply her.

How much is she being charged, and does she have to pay this during the holidays?

thanks ethel,
there are 3 package prices 150 , 200, and 250. Whichever package chosen, payment is made up front and covers a period of 10 months. Just thought i would enquire if there was any other way, but like you point out, dont have the authority to change. Will have to bite the bullet and go with the isp provider.
No, that's what uni is like.

Some universities (mine, anyway) charge about 70/year for a 8mb connection, that is brilliant. Others charge a lot more for a much slower service.
That is disappointing, Debs. I would have expected it to be somewhat cheaper.

But not being in the university loop any more, I hadn't given it a thought.
