You can use applications such as MailWasher (free)

Use Mailwasher and/or 'disposable' e-mail accounts. See my post, here:

I agree with all the above. There's no way of stoping them, you just have to get an intelligent filter that can move them to your junk folder, out of your inbox, for you.
I suggest Gmail. Sign up for a free account here:
http://www.gmail.com
It's free and very good. What's more, it has the best spam filter available.
You have the choice of telling everyone your new address, or using Gmail to simply grab the email from your other accounts for you (and then putting everything through its own filters). The help files online for Gmail will tell you how, or if you fancy doing it then you can always ask on here for more help :)

Most free e-mail accounts only allow web-based access. As Fo3nix has indicated, GMail is the most popular service which allows you to use Outlook Express (or similar software).
Some people don't like GMail because of the way that it automatically scans your mail, in order to append advertising material:

My own preference, for an advert-free account which can be used with Outlook Express, is Gawab. Set-up instructions are in paragraph 3, et seq, of my post here:
