I have just purchased a laptop and am trying to connect to the internet but everytime I enter my security code it tells me it is wrong. Is there any way I can check my security code on my desktop to ensure I have got it right as I am not entirely sure I have?

The easiest way is to connect to the router by ethernet in the first instance, and re-entering all the settings in the admin set up page.

Then it will automatically connect when you disconnect the cable.

Sorry Ethel but that is a bit technical for me. I have no idea about settings PCs up, always get someone to do that for me. I am not even sure if it is my security code I am looking for. It asks for 'network key'. Is that the same thing.
Thanks anyway, I appreciate your time.
Okay. Now is the time for you to bite the bullet and learn.

You need to access your router admin page. You do this by typing

192.168.1.101

in the address bar at the top of the page.

This will open up the admin pages, but sadly all routers have different layouts. You need to look for 'wireless', 'wifi' or 'security'

In amongst that you will find the network key. This is what you need to type in to the box on to your laptop.

Good luck
not always this may differ,
mine is 192.168.1.254

check your manual.
If you are just using WEP for security then there is a good chance that the WEP key will be on a sticker somewhere on the router, have a look, if not then see Ethel's solution but....

To get the correct address to type in your browser do the following, on start menu select run and type (without quotes) "cmd" and hit enter, on the screen this brings up type (no quotes) "ipconfig /all" and hit enter

In the information this brings up look for the default gateway and make a note of the address next to this. this is the correct address to put in your address bar on the browser to get access to the router admin pages,

Followed the both of you so far which is a big step for me! Discovered my IP address is 192.168.1.1 but when I go there it asked me for my password which I imagine is back to where I started. Once again thanks to you all.
What router is it?

Question Author
ethel, please excuse my ignorance. I am not sure what a router is. Would that be the Linksys thing?
try these

Default user names:

Linksys BEFW11S4, WRT54G: admin
Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Ethernet routers: Administrator
Linksys Comcast routers: comcast
All other Linksys routers: [none]

Default passwords:
Linksys BEFW11S4: [none]
Linksys Comcast routers: 1234
All other Linksys routers: admin
yeah the linksys thing would be the router, kujawski has already covered normal passwords and usernames (ta), if they don't work may also make a difference to know who supplied the router, which would probably be your internet provider. only say this as some, sky for example, set a lot of their default passwords to be something else.

Thanks to everyone for their help. All sorted now.

Just wanted to let Ethel know I have now discovered what an Ethernet cable is. Believe it ot not a big step forward for me.
Just not too sure what you mean by 're-entering all the settings in the admin set up page. '
