What is the difference and does it matter which one you use? My modem will not work with the ethernet (modem not found) but will work with the ubs.

Ethernet was developed for networking.

USB is for miscellaneous peripherals.

Since a modem is for networking, it should be using ethernet.

However (and annoyingly), many broadband modems supplied for free by ISPs tend to come with USB ports, for some reason I don't know about.
The modem doesn't appear as part of your computer in the Ethernet mode. Your computer treats it more like another computer.

Just run the setup disk to configure the modems connection to the Internet and you should be online.

The USB port can be useful if you want total control over access to the modem. If it is just plugged into a network any computer can potentially access it. On the USB port it is behind the computer's firewall.
