How to get website known on search engines

I set up a website on Google Sites then found that it does not support Keywords. Would I be right in assuming that this means it will never register with any search engine?

The next question is has anyone used a free website maker that has the facility to be " found" by a search engine. I want to use it as a showcase so it needs to be found by people googling!

A free website maker? Sure Notepad if you know HTML.

If you have MS Word you can use that to design a website from scratch.
