Well my laptops quite old but I plan on selling it to a friend however a while ago, I brought it and the guy who sold it had locked the free trial of windows xp, however it was soon stopped and I had to install the real windows xp, however since that has been installed my sound hasn't worked at all. It comes up with an error message saying "There is a problem with your sound device or there may not be a sound device installed into your computer" and it's a laptop so... The speakers are attached, i've tried plugging headphones in or speakers and still no sound I don't know if it's the sound card.... But any help would be appreciated.
lostxflower, you need a sound driver for you sound card to work... look in device manager for yellow question marks. if there is any you will need drivers for them too. try googling the laptop make and model e.g sony viao drivers. that should get your sound working :)
You`ve probably deleted the drivers when you reinstalled windows. I did the same myself the first time I did a reinstall.
You need to go to the manufacturers website and download new drivers.
Wasn`t sure what to look for, when I did it, so I downloaded them all, saved to desktop, then copied them to a disc.
Then go into device manager and reinstall them from the disc.
windows comes with many drivers for old and basic sound cards (and other hardware) and so can be installed automatically when installing windows but for many you will need to find out what sound card you have and download the drivers and install them
