MP3 files

I recently tried to back up my mp3 files onto a detachable hard drive for security. Within the the "My Computer" bit of windows I inadvertantly moved the files from my hard drive to the external one rather than simply copied which is what I intended to do. Having realised my mistake I copied them back and although they show as mp3 files neither Windows media player or other software then seem to be able to play them. Additionally the software I use to manage my mp3 player library does not seem to be able to identify them. Any ideas/suggestions of how to sort the issue gratefully received. Does anyone know of any sites with detailed guidance on managing mp3 files.

Assuming you did a proper copy back to your harddrive you should be able to play them with Windows Media Player for example.

mp3 files are just ordinairy files and need no special management.

Are you sure you fully copied them back, maybe you just create a shortcut ?

If you did a shortcut the icon should have a little arrow in the corner.

There area number of ways to copy files so maybe do it again to make sure it worked.

Open the folder where the mp3 files are on the EXTERNAL drive.

Select the Edit menu then "Select All"

Then select the Edit menu again then select "Copy"

Now open the folder where you want the mp3 files to go.

Then select Edit then Paste.

This should copy all the files from the external drive back to the hard drive.

If the files are already there you may be asked if you want to overwrite them. Just select Yes to make sure.

(The menus in XP and Vista are slightly different - in Vista you use the Organize menu rather than Edit)

If the files are showing - are they showing size (approx 3Mb per file)? - if there was a problem - or if you pulled the plug before writing had finished it's possible to get 0 length files
