FAO Dabees/Buenchico Outlook Express prob.
Hi!
Well,I think I have got my Outlook Express going again.
But, somehow I have made another problem for myself.
I have created a new account....Microsoft Outlook 2000.
I am astoundingly cack handed at typing on my keyboard.
Even typing this thread in I am having to go back at what I have typed just to correct my spelling.I'm not very good at tapping in sentences.Maybe I'm typing my letters too quick.
Anyway,by creating a new account,I have done a disastrous thing.I think I have somehow lost all my contact email addresses of people and friends.I am gobsmacked!! I don't know if can retrace my steps and find a way to get them all back.
You must think 'what a dimwit I am'.

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.Your PC obviously has two separate email client programs on it. One is Outlook (2000). The other is Outlook Express. Somehow or other you seem to have opened Outlook (which doesn't have your contacts list), rather than Outlook Express, when creating your new account.
Assuming that you want to stick with Outlook Express as your default mail client, you can completely ignore the new account which you created in Outlook. Simply open Outlook Express (from Start>All Programs, or from a desktop shortcut). You should find that your contacts list is still there. Check that it's set as your default email program by going to Tools>Options>General and make sure that 'This application is the default mail handler' is displayed. (If not, click 'Make default', 'Apply' and 'OK').
Then go to Tools>Accounts>Add>Mail to (once again) create a new mail account, with your correct POP3 and SMTP settings.
Then simply use Outlook Express (rather than Outlook) to send and receive your mail.

I'd be surprised if you couldn't simply solve all of your problems by going back to Outlook Express and creating a fresh account in that program. (That's what I'd do).
However, if you'd rather use Outlook, you'll need to copy your contacts list between the two programs:

Just try to keep things simple to start with.
Open Outlook Express. Go to Tools > Accounts > Add > Mail.
Create a new account using the following information:
For your username, enter your full Talktalk email address. e.g. if your email address is [email protected], enter exactly that (and not just 'imhotep').
When you enter your password, remember that it's case-dependent, e.g. 'mypassword' is not the same as 'Mypassword'. Take care to type it carefully.
For the outgoing server enter smtp.talktalk.net
For the incoming server enter mail.talktalk.net
That should do the trick. I've fixed lots of problems with Outlook Express (both on my own PCs and on those of others) by simply re-creating the mail accounts. However, in just one case (when trying to solve a problem for an elderly friend) creating a fresh account didn't work. I was certain that the problem was with her ISP's server (which wasn't recognising her password), rather than with the Outlook Express settings on her PC. The ISP's helpline required a lot of persuading that the fault could be at their end of the system but they eventually agreed to check and, finally, accepted that they needed to correct a fault. Perhaps you're in a similar position? If so, try speaking to Talktalk on 0870 0875562. (If they can't help on that number, try 0871 226 7146 instead).

Might be something to do with my brother's spare monitor that I have connected recently to my PC.My old one packed up! I get an announcement every time I switch on my PC with AwardBIOS Setup Utility.

I forgot to tell you that I did phone TalkTalk,and the man at the other end said that it was not only me who was having the same problem.Many other people had it too.
Apparently one of their servers (i think) had technical problems and their engineers were working on it,and he said that they would try and hopefully fix the problem in the next 24 hours.But,the problem still exists in my Outlook express even after 24 hours.
