My nice up to date laptop has bitten the dust. I am now using an 8year-old Dell with Windows XP Professional installed. It needs updates...but I do not know what.....as it stands, I cannot use Windows Live Messenger on it., cannot apply sound alerts..and I have also recieved a notification when on youtube,that I need to install a "modern " browser. What sould I be looking for??...and which updates???

Have you installed Mozilla Firefox. That will move you to required updates. Stick with XP as lots of gizmos aren't compatible with Vista.
