does anybody know how ares works?

i´ve downloaded ares recently, downloading music and films is the easy bit, but trying to put the music onto my mp3 player, and films onto dvds, inpossible!!!

Any download with Ares (or any other P2P) client will almost certainly be illegal. Expect to get hit with a big bill:

If you're determined to carry on breaking the law then you need to tell us the formats of the files which you've downloaded. (Are they individual files, or 'multi-part'. Are the music files already in MP3 format, or are they compressed to ZIP or RAR files? Are the DVDs in VOB format, or something else?).
