Hi, I have a wi-fi antenna high up on a pole and after some years I could not get on line for the last 3 days. I have 2 USBs connected halfway down the pole to extend the cable to my PC. Although it was well waterproofed water had got in and corroded the terminals (partly green). I cleaned these with a thin knife and dry tissue and I am back on line. The thing is, to make a cleaner job can I use contact-cleaner that you normally use for electronics. I cannot renew all the cable as the shorter one would come directly from the small antenna
(looks like a mobile phone) D-link. It would be a heck of a job to get it down off the pole anyway.
Thank you....Almendros

Thats a novel way of doing it! (and I'm surprised it works, USB is only meant to work upto 5metres!)

But never mind that, if its working we will ignore the fact it probably shouldn't be :)

Yeah contact cleaner will be fine to use on USB, there is nothing special about USB connections at all.
I would recommend the use of insulation tape (wrapped around the plugs/sockets) to protect the connections from the elements.

Such a commercial product would require adequate protection in the event of a lightening strike – limited protection could be achieved by placing a lightening conductor close to the antenna. But my advice would be to not use the system during an electrical storm.

Hallo Chuck and Hymie, Sorry I havent thanked you before, but I have been away from the house.
Thanks for your advice and I can now use contact cleaner if I have to open up the USB extension connection. Yes I reckon I am using about 5 metres in all to get into the glass-fronted box that contains the antenna. Cheers Almendros
