using internal hard drive as a portable external one...

i have some leads that turn desktop drives into portable drives, that u can plug in to any comp...
i have been backing up my stuff on one spare drive...but now...for no reason, the comp is no longer recognising any of the drives i plug in - i have about 5 of them... its has been ok up to now...
the comp, recognising something has been plugged in, it automatically installs the software, recognises the device...but nothing appears in 'computer' anymore...its used to appear as a 3rd hard drive...
any ideas way this might have suddenly started to happen...i have unplugged an replugged and restarted comp, but no change...
could the leave have suddenly failed and broken? an if so why is windows reading the device if the leads have broken?
cheers
