CANNOT DISPLAY WEBPAGE

Hi after being on the internet for about 20 minutes, everything slows down ,then every website i try to go to the same message comes up ,cannot display webpage ,even though i still have a connection . to get around this i have to unplug my router for a couple of secs ,plug back in and wait for a connection again , bit of a pain, any ideas how to remedy this,

Aaaaagh! The dreaded DNS problem!!!

I've no idea why it occurs but you need to go into your router settings and look for the DNS ('domain name server') setting. By default it will be set to allow your ISP's server to automatically assign DNS addresses. You need to change it so that it uses the DNS addresses which you provide. They're just strings of numbers (e.g. 62.6.40.178). You'll need to enter two such strings (one 'primary', one 'secondary'). The DNS addresses used by your ISP are probably here:

(if in doubt, just use the OpenDNS addresses, at the bottom of the first link. They'll work for any ISP).

When you installed your router it should have come with a manual. It might be on paper but it's more likely to be in a PDF (or HTML) file on your PC. The instructions for accessing your router settings should be in there.

My router settings are accessed via a local web page. I enter 192.168.2.1 into the address bar of my browser, and then click 'Go'. (That takes me to a login page). My router is from Belkin. If you've got the same make, the same URL should work. However different makes of router require a different address to be entered into the browser. If you can't find the manual (which should tell you how to access the settings), try googling the name of your router, together with 'settings'. Alternatively, post again and I'll see if I can find the relevant information.

thanks chris , just asked jeeves , took me through control panel way ,ended up putting in the two numbers as you said, so i will see if it works again thanks for your help .
