Net book gone to bright

For some unknown reason today the net book has a mind of it's own as far as brightness is concerned,it is stuck on nearest the brightest setting.When I try to bring the brightness down using Fn and the bright down arrow nothing happens,but here is the strange bit,when I go into the control panel,display,it says the brightness is on the lowest possible level!Please can someone solve this riddle cos it is too bright for me to use at the moment.
