If you logon to web sites with your "normal" email password then each time you logon to a web site you are "giving away" your email address and password combination.
Someone could steal these and then logon to your email system.

Companies and others sell lists of their customers email addresses. I once filled in an application with my email , for a free gift from Kellogs and a week later I was inundated with hundreds of junk emails. It was so bad I had to scrap that address and get another one. Since then I have several email addresses and I restrict them for different purposes. I give my junk mail address to anyone who I don't care what they do with them and I keep one just for family members.
Changing your password is the obvious thing to do, but there are a few other things you can do as well. http://www.ghacks.net...count-is-compromised/ is a full description of things to do when your email account gets hacked.
