Printer Problem

I've got an HP Deskjet. Just lately it keeps saying that I've not got the ink cartridge inserted correctly, even though I haven't. Sometimes it prints okay and sometimes it's 5hite. I know it's not the newest of printers, but I don't want to buy a new one if it's something simple. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You could remove the cartridges and then clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge with a small brush and Methylated Spirits. They could have a bit of grease or dirt on them.
You could also clean the contacts inside the printer but switch it off first.
