I'm assuming that you're currently only looking for an alternative email address, rather than for domain names.
I prefer to use an email service which allows POP3 access (via an email client, such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird or Windows Mail) as well as web-based access.
Most free services don't offer POP3 access. Of those that do, Google's own GMail is by far the most well known:
