desk top pc and laptop

I hope I can explain this so you understand. I have had my desk top pc for a few years but I would like to buy a wireless laptop. But I still want to keep my desktop one running. Can I set up the laptop to use with same e mail addresses and everything the same as desktop one. What do I have to do to work them both the same.Thanks for any help if you can understand this .

All your cybering will work on wifi laptop & desktop, ie...same email/AB/FB etc.
Program work like MS Office etc can be emailed to yourself and opened on either pc. or stored & moved to open via USB chip.

ok thanks now when I set up the laptop for the first time do I just register same details as I have on my desk one and can I just use my same security disk. I have had both broadband and security with tesco with no problems. Must sound like a right thicko but would rather ask here than at the shop .

For the laptop you will be asked for a WEP number which you got from your modem/router.

The numbers I wrote down when when set up were an originater number for tesco net. then a security CD KEY number like this XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.
Do I have to buy a router as well. This gets more complicted but considering I didnt start on computers till I retired I have learned loads.. so I will get there on this as I won't understand if I don't do it myself.

Yes you need a router. It needs to be a wireless router.

The signal that comes down your phone line goes into a modem. This can normally only serve one computer (via a cable).

If you want two or more computers to use the same broadband connection you need to buy a router. A router contains a modem so it replaces the existing modem.

Your internet supplier may supply you a modem for free, or at least sell you one that has a setup disk so it sets it up easily for you desktop and laptop.

The desktop PC can continue to use the modem/router via a cable, but if you buy a wireless router your laptop can connect via wi fi.

Assumiong you are running Windows it has a lot of help explainging how to set up home networks and wi fi and so on.

Just open the Windows help and search for "Home Network" or "Router" and it is all explained there.

Yes I have windows. Just one more question do I need separate security or will my tesco that I pay along with my broadband cover the lap top as well. Thanks.

It depends if the security software is for one PC or more than one PC.

When you buy any software it entitles you to put it on only one machine, or more than one machine.

You need to check the paperwork that came wth your security software to find out. My GUESS it is for only one PC.

There is plenty of very good free security software out there.

also, what programme do you use to recieve your emails? If you use outlook, you will only be able to get them on one machine
