in safe mode computer runs ok ,switching on normally screen goes blank black

Have you installed anything new recently? Uninstall it if you have. Try system restore to a point prior to the date you started having problems. You won't lose files but anything installed after the restore point date will be lost.

Start in safe mode, turn the screen resolution right down and then restart. if that doesn't work download the graphics drivers for your laptop on another computer, put them on a USB memory stick, or CD, start the laptop in safe mode again and install the graphics drivers from the stick or CD.

Have you plugged the laptop into a monitor? You could try pressing the "fn" key and the change monitor button. Which on my laptop is the "F4" key.
