Stick the vacuum cleaner nozzle up against all the ventilation holes that you can find.

See if that does it.
Mine started doing it a few months ago and I looked up a 'how to' guide online. It was really easy to do and it has been fine ever since. Save your money - it'll take you ten minutes tops! I'll see if I can find the guide.

thanks hopkirk, but ive tried that, and its still the same
If it is making noise it may be the motor bearings that are causing it. Just being dirty does not make things noisy.

hi karen, thanks,
i remember you posting about your fan and how you sorted it, i think i remember adding to it aswell at the time,
ive been looking on youtube at a few of their 'how to' videos, but im a bit worried incase id mess up and make a hash of it.
i heard you get to some fans by opening up the back of the laptop, and others you have to remove the keyboard to get to it (?)
im not sure which one applies to mine..?
sooo, i thought itd probably be easier to get someone who knows what theyre doing, depending on the cost of course!

oh right scotsman, thanks, hmmm, thats got me wondering now...
My fan packed up. A replacement cost £7.50 but the guy charged £17.50 to fit it. Probably took him all of 10 seconds.
Google 'how to clean fan for - whatever make and model you have - laptop'
Question Author
thanks for the link karen, just having a look now..
Obviously you make sure it is clean and see what happens to the noise.

hmm, they know how to charge dont they mike?! lol.
My PC is about 9 years old. I stick the vacuum cleaner against the power supply and processor fan outlets every now and again. I did remove the processor fan cover and clean it properly recently for the first time. It was not really dirty. Can't comment on laptops.
if you don't feel confident to do it yourself, there may be a local computer enthusiast club listed by your library or Citizens advice bureau. They will probably show you how to do it and you may meet some interesting people.
What's the make and model of the laptop?

I do a fair amount of them, I've done an asus this morning that took me about 5 minutes in total to change it and required a total of 6 screws to be removed. I done an HP a week or so ago that took about an hour to change and needed a complete strip down of the laptop and the main board removing to get access to the fan, which is a big job! so there is no way anyone can give an idea of how much it will cost without knowing how much work would be involved.
OH and to anyone that tries to use an airline, a can of compressed air, or even a vacuum cleaner to clean their fan on a laptop, two bits of advice...

1) always clean by making the airflow the opposite direction to the normal airflow the fan creates, otherwise you'll just be blowing/sucking the fluff deeper into the heatsink.

2) always use something to lock the fan so it can't spin (a cocktail stick will do on most laptops) otherwise the airflow over the fan will cause it to spin, then the motor in the fan will act as a little generator and you'll end up putting voltage the wrong way through the laptops main board, which can be very bad news!
