Touch Screen PC, will it take off?

I was in my Favourite PC shop on Saturday and on their counter they had a touchscreen PC/monitor I naturally had to play with it for a minute or two.

I think I would sooner just use a mouse, you cant settle back in comfort if you got to keep leaning forward to touch the monitor, I didn't like it.

Do you think it will take off?

No, for just that reason, holding your arms out in front of you to touch a screen is not a comfortable position to hold for an extended period (can you imagine trying to work for 8 hours on the system in minority report... extreme RSI)

Touchscreens are only practicable on handheld devices or at a push on table type surfaces.

Touchscreens are not that new. You see them in some commercial salesrooms where folk touch the 'button' they want. I think they may be in banks too. I suspect they at more useful in a design where the screen is horizontal, maybe ?

On a PC I'd trather use my trackball, but for some reason I'm unsure that the manufacturer still makes my favoured design any more. Hope mine lasts for years yet.

As usual, I agree with Chuck! Apart from the discomfort, I don't want fingermarks all over my screen.

For handhelds with no mouse, touchscreen looks like a better idea than touchpad.

Was considering one in a retail shop and the assistant came over and practically begged me NOT to buy one!!!

similar in many ways to laptops in that they are practically impossible to upgrade in any way and in his words 'underpowered and over priced'

I have got one, but I prefer to use my mouse. All that touching makes the screen very mucky too.

A cursor is more exact than thick fingers!
We had them at the cash desks where mistakes weren't uncommon.
I still used the keyboard.

I think its a great idea for work purposes (granted, maybe not for all workplaces). But for me in my role aty work it would be great!

I think the thing is that tech firms constantly come up with innovations, that we don't really need, but are nice to have. They do this, for the obvious reason, to make money. However we don't take to all of them, hello laser dic , mini disk, beta max.

I see yesterday the launch of the icloud, which will charge you money to access the stuff you have already bought off Apple, now as hard as I try I cannot see any advatage to the personal user as anything you are going to access will take time (maybe a lot of time) to upload.

Business applications are obvious, however as Sony prove a 3rd party is no place to keep things you find precious.
