wireless broadband

First of all sorry for perhaps sounding a bit thick but if you don't ask you won't ever get to know.

I was wondering if anyone could explain to me how the wireless broadband works. I think I've heard something about the laptop having a "mobile card" inserted. Is this correct ?

But does that mean you also get charged mobile rates ? Is it quite expensive or what ?

My interpretation of what you mean by wireless boradband is having a broadband connection which is available over a wireless network in your house.  In which case, no you don't get charged mobile rates.

On the other hand, you can buy wireless 3G and wireless GPRS cards for a laptop which are supposed to be (depending on coverage) wireless 'broadband' wherever you are.  You will be charged by the mobile company for the amount of data you download and send.

The laptop I use has a wireless connection to the main computer in the house, so you only pay once, but can use the internet on various things, such as the tablet pc as well.

I had no idea that you can get wireless broadband installed in you house and not pay mobile rates. I thought the only way to go about it was through the 3G cards.

You would need a Wireless router.  Some are available with a built in modem but if you already have a broadband modem then you can get just a wireless router.  The modem plugs into the router and then broadcasts wireless.  Your laptop, depending on make, can have either a wireless mobile-PCI card installed or a wireless card via one of its slots.

If you have a normal PC in the house then that can be connected by wire to the router or you can get a wireless PCI card for the PC as well.

I have 1 laptop and 3 pcs all sharing wireless broadband. All works really well, and you only pay one fee!
