Have you looked into a retro Psion PDA? Those devices are LCD screen and battery life is very good.

A netbook?

(for example)
and there are several options for word processor software that are free and they'll be more than suitable for most needs.

Why not a netbook though, I've had various Psions over the years and the file conversion can be a bit buggy at times and I don't think they're supported any more (leastways the Psion7 etc. aren't). I suppose if you're looking for a smaller form factor the the Psion 5 series would fit the bill but typing large amounts on them can be frustrating, depends how big your hands are. Pretty sure all of the original Psions use a serial cable to connect to computer so you may want to factor that in as well. As I said, I loved and used Psions from the 3 onward but everything else stopped working nicely with them :-(

record it orally ie dictaphone or an mp3 player that can also record or any recording device that will produce a digital format file.
then use speech to text conversion software which i believe some dictaphones already come with.
or get a copy of dragon naturally speaking (the best IMO).
Superb conversion accuracy out of the box .
Even with having to make corrections it will still be a ton of time quicker than typing it all out.
Probably no slower than proof reading /spell checking
