email pictures

I am unable to open a lot of pictures sent to me by email from people I know and trust. I get a blank square where the picture should be with a small coloured square in the top left corner. when I right click this the menu includes "show picture" however nothing happens when I click it. I'm aware that I am a right numpty with computers so would really appreciate some advice.
