Explorer tabs question

I'm currently finding that if I open a second tab in IE and then go to a new page, it not only comes up on that tab, but replaces the page on the first tab - so I have that new page on both tabs. It's very irritating. Does anyone know why it happens and how I can stop it? Thanks
