document not opening

i wrote a letter in microsoft word on my old laptop that was windows xp i now have new laptop which is windows 7 but when i open the letter on new laptop it is just a load of letters like this
#xxxyxyxxnm,cnyyyye jxixxxxxxxxxxxxzzzzzzzzzz
why wont it show what i had typed in the letter

sir prize i am new to computers so please bear with me im trying to teach myself as i go i wrote the letter on my old laptop and i used to write letters in works so im asuming i did it in works but i did have word on that laptop aswell , now its got the letters wps next to the document does that tell you who may understand computers what i wrote it on ? i saved it on a stick but when i put the stick in this computer the letter comes up in what looks like gobbledi *** lol
