How to create and host your own website

My OH wants to create his own website to advertise his services.

It is likely to be fairly basic with a page about the company and then some links to various pages on the website (eg What we do, how we do it etc) and some external websites. It will also need to include a couple of photos.

The company is in its infancy and so not flush with cash. Is it possible to do something this simple yourself? If so, is there a package (preferably free to download!) which would help?

Who hosts it? Is there a reasonable and professional hosting service?

And how does one ensure that his company comes up in "google searches" without actually paying for a sponsored link?

Any info would be gratefully received. TIA

This is good for basic websites, with just a few pages:
http://www.serif.com/...ftware/?mc=FSSWEBPLUS
(it runs on XP, Vista or 7)

This definitely runs under XP. Many sources state that you can use it with Vista but I doubt that it work under 7:

This hosting service is well-respected and used by many big companies:

For a professional image, ensure that you sign up for an email service (using the same domain name as your website) as well as for basic web-hosting.

PS: How are your plans for your 'wills' talks going?

Thank you Chris. I will check those out (OH is a little bit of a technophobe, so I guess I shall have to do it!)

I've been planning the talk in my head in the car today (taking on board a lot of the comments that were helpfully posted in my thread), but it will have to go to one side now because I am going to be ridiculously busy over the next 2 weeks.
nice to know serif are still going. I used their 'Page Plus' software back in the mid 90s on an x386 PC! It was their own version of MS Publisher.

If you have the full version of Office then Frontpage is a good website editor. I used to train it many years ago in previous incarnations.

As Booldawg says, Microsoft's own website building software is surprisingly good, but Frontpage hasn't been in the (full) Microsoft Office suite since 2003. It has been replaced by Expression Web.

>>>Office then Frontpage is a good website editor

As has already been said NEVER use FrontPage to design a web site.

Wont bother to explain why, but it was NOT a good web site creater (even Microsoft knew that which is why they stopped making it and selling it).
Why not create a blog with Blogger?

http://www.blogger.com

1) It totally free

2) It is easy to use, no "web design" skils required

You dont say what busines he is in, but many people use blogger to advertise their business.

Here for example is one for a carpenter / woodworker

http://villagecarpenter.blogspot.com/
Ditto
As you want a business orientated site I'd say a blog is not suitable!

Barmaid... I've just tried to put you in touch with a mate on FB who specialises in this sort of thing, I'm sure he will advise you for free

moonfruit.com is quite easy to use..I have used it under another name, naturally, to keep it from some of the loons on here (not all the population of course, whom I wouldn't mind sharing with at all).
