It's simple micmak, "Medicinal" is always the excuse with Methodists where, in the old days, abstention was the word/command - my grandfather was notorious for it. One year for Christmas, and with no coordination between us, my parents and his 4 grandchildren each gave him a bottle of Cherry Brandy, his little "medicinal" tipple - the huffing and puffing was priceless.
