Can't you just wipe the hard drive and start again? When we hand in computers no longer needed, that's what our IT team do, then they can reissue you them clean.

no cant wipe it, we need to check it as we beilive private information from the company has being removed and taken to the new employment
It's a shame this coudn't have been addressed before the employee leur IT needs for you?ft.
Do you have an IT person/department or a company that looks after your IT needs for you?
Have you tried a google search?
You seriously need to look at your IT policies if you have staff leaving and you don't have access to their laptop! (also not sure how you are going to check to see if anything has been copied off the laptop as it won't have file auditing)

The obvious thing for you to do would be to log in as the admin account on the laptop and change the users password to a known one.... but I'm going to guess this isn't an option for you (it should be)

Yes you can change the password.

And take this as an indication that it's time for your IT policy to be looked at!
