Facebook - stopping status updates?

I have 'liked' a couple of facebook friends/organisations which send out A LOT of status updates! Is there a way that I can still like them/stay in touch with them but stop receiving all their posts?

I am relatively new to facebook so please understand if this doesn't make sense!

Hover over them on your news feed, towards the right top hand corner of the post, and a 'x' should appear, click on that and select 'Hide posts from ...' :)
