Panasonic 'combi' DVD Recorder/VHS 'cannot read disc'

I have a Panasonic DMR-EZ48VEB combi.

The VHS tape works fine, but when I put any disc in the DVD it makes loud clunking sounds (like it is trying to read the disc) then comes up 'cannot read disc'. It does this on brand new films, blank discs, other discs I have already recorded on and also on a cleaner disc I tried.

The DVD bit has not had a lot of use, we mainly use the VHS side of the machine and the machine is about 4 years old.

Any ideas would be welcome as there does not seem to be many repair people around nowadays!

Could be a laser problem. Unsure how repairable these things are. May need to replace.

I found a very stupid answer,my dvd recorder did that a couple of times & I discovered I had inadvertently put 2 discs in together & one was sliding on top of the other.

It's a great pity that there are not many repair people around nowadays.

I am somewhat fortunate that about 4/5 mile from my village there is a 'local' firm that supplies and repairs TVs, Videos etc. Consequently, when I bought a new TV., after my original had been 'written off' when my house was struck by lightening, I wished to retain my Daewoo DVD/VHS machine which was deemed to be still in working order. However, it would not function correctly with the new Panasonic TV, and my local firm was informed by Panasonic that my original Recorder/Player was incompatible with their TVs and should be replaced. Fortunately my Dealer could not accept the fact and stripped-down the item and was able to adapt it so that it is now in complete working order.

I am sorry that I cannot help to resolve your problem but have related my experience as an illustration that things can be put right if one can find the right person to repair things.

Problem with repairing most things these days is, given a choice what would people do, pay somebody £50 to replace a £30 part (£80 total) or go and buy a new whatever for £50? with the increasingly low cost of consumer electronics (and their increased complexity) it's just not worth repairing stuff most the time.

That said, I refuse to accept that myself sometimes and have been known to spend hours fixing something that could be replaced for peanuts just for the satisfaction of getting it working again :)

Thing is this model is still on sale, Maplins have them for 315 and Argos have them for 299, so they are not cheap, if they were say a hundred pounds I would not mind too much and would just get a new one.

It is just really annoying when the rest of the machine is working fine, I am really reluctant to go out and buy a new one that may only last 3/4 years.

I also have a Samsung combi model that again is only a few years old, it intermittently jams up where everything goes off and the machine switches off and will not respond to anything! It does it out of the blue without anything triggering it so is virtually useless.

Had two (different make) previously that went wrong in the first 6 months, at least I got my money back with them!

Beginning to wonder if these combi's are worth the money.
