LG Cookie GM360 - no internet?

I bought the cheap & cheerful (but with good camera) LG Cookie GM360 yesterday, swapping onto it my Vodafone PAYG SIM. Calls & text work fine, but I'm unable to connect to browser/FaceBook/Twitter - I just get a 'connection failed' message every time, even when I select 'Home' as the default location. The manual doesn't help. Does anyone know if there's some setting I need to invoke/change to make web surfing possible?
The reason I bought this mobile is that I bought the same one for my daughter a few months ago, and she managed to get online immediately; the only difference is her PAYG is O2 rather than Vodafone, but I can't imagine that makes any difference at all.

Thanks for your effort Twix. The answer was different; there was a phone setting that was defaulted to Contract rather than PAYG, but it was a bit hidden and it didn't explain why I was able to send & receive calls/texts.
All sorted now!
