Do you know where your fuel filter is located?  It's often at the back of the engine and against the bulkhead.  On top of the fuel filter housing will be a 'bleed nut'.

On the engine will be a fuel pump.  This usually has a manually hand pump (a rod with a plastic plunger).

Connect a hose (you don't have to) to the top of the bleed nut and slacken the bleed nut.  Give the fuel pump a few pumps until you see bubble free diesel coming out.  Tighten the bleed nut and see if that fixes it.

do the above but your lights come on because it has water in it. At the bottom of the filter housing there  will be a drain bung. drain out the fluid tighten and reprime filter with fuel pump located (if fitted )next to or ontop of your filter.

Doh, forgot about that!!  Shows how long ago I worked on diesels!!! :)
